Campbell beats Morehead State |
Lead | |

Well....I said last week in a post that we had hit rock bottom...well I was wrong. Now we have. Campbell which is only in the second year of its program
according to ESPN beat Morehead State today 31-22. This is Campbell first ever PFL win. Something has to happen now. Morehead State has to make some changes
either in coaching or players. This is not exceptable we might go winless in the PFL this year.

The hot seat needs to be placed under someone.
Campbell is an example of what you do right in football. Brand new facilty that puts Jayne Stadium to shame...check. Commitment to improving....check. Campbell is joining the Big South soon, which sponsors football, and I would think the plan is to get scholarships and compete for a national championship while MSU is content to languish in a league they've never won and show no signs of actually committing to improving. At the EKU game last year we experience what real college football is like. I'm just saying. |

Embarrassing! I knew Campbell was improving greatly each week and this would be a tough game, but there is no excuse this time. I still think we can beat Valpo
but after this nothing is certain.

I think if you listened to the game, the coaches interviews the last few weeks etc you would get the feeling that things seem to be changing. Young players on
both sides of the ball are now playing, and the offense has been opened up. I, like you have been concerned about the direction of the program but by all
accounts, it looks like they have decided to rebuild with youth. Remember, their are alot of good kids redshirting also. It is very, very important this off
season to bring in alot of speed and athleticism. That is where the Eagles are falling behind IMO. Coach Ballard and staff better get to work.

Its hard to get speed and athletism when you are picking from the left overs of every Division one/NAIA/Division two schools have giving schloarships to those
kind of players.

I really don't understand your scolly views. Here is what I have found out with a little research. Teams such as EKU and Murray very seldom give full
rides. They take financial aid, grants and other money student athletes receive and try to fill the rest. Yes, some of it is athletic scholarship money, but it
is divided out among alot of players. Morehead doesn't give athletic money per say, but evens it out with more options for money, financial aid, grants
etc. Along with the cheap tuition, it works out for most of the football players. Athletic scholarship vs financial aid, grants, keys or whatever, as long as
tuition is payed then so be it.
I am sure there are alot of football players at Morehead that are not paying for too much. Also, Morehead landed several of the top players in Ky last season. There are 3-4 I know personally that could have went to alot of D-1 places. I'm sure that these kids would not have signed with Morehead if they had to pay their on way.

There is an NCAA rule that say you have to give scholarships to an X number of players. I think the number is around 65. I could be wrong. But if that is true
than Murray and EKU have at least give 65 of their players scholarships. They might not be full rides but they cover more than what players would get at
Morehead. And I know there are some players that pay almost full tution to be on the team here at Morehead. So the grant aid, finanical aid stuff only apply to
those who qualifiy just like everyone else on campus, and quite frankly most do not get enough aid that would rival any form of scholarship at a 1 AA (FCS)
school.

I-AA (FCS) schools can give up to 63 football scholarships. I-A (FBS) schools can give up to 83 football scholarships. There is no NCAA rule on a minimum
number of scholarships, but some conferences have their own rules....the OVC requires a minimum of 50 for its members. The NEC conference used to be
non-scholarship like the PFL, but about 4 years ago they voted to allow their member schools to offer up to 30 scholarships, but their member schools don't
have to offer. I think that approach would be a good one for the PFL. Since the NEC added 30 scholarships, their results on the field have improved. PFL
schools could do it the same way and allow schools who wish to, to offer some scholarships...which would help our staff land a couple other players per class
that they would ordinarily lose out on, but it wouldn't be as big of a financial burden as 50-63 scholarships would be.

Bottom line is this. After all the smoke clears with the financial aid, grants, etc, MSU has money available to help alot of football players with their needs.
It might not be called athletic scholarship money. It might not be spread out thru 65 players. But there is money in the budget I promise you.

Good question. If there is money there use it. This year will probably be a forgotten year like the two win season a few years ago.
